MCV Magnets: Minimum condensed Volume magnets.

Minimum condensed volume superconducting magnet

Minimum condensed Volume(MCV) Magnets

MCVTM Cryogen-free superconducting magnet systems are designed to have zero cryogen consumption whilst retaining the features and benefits of traditional "wet" superconducting systems.

  • Reduced cost compared with "dry" systems
  • Short term immunity to electrical power failure (1 hour typical).

Once installed the MCV magnet requires no cryogen refills.

MCV magnet systems are available with either uniform fields (12, 14 or 16 tesla) or magnets with gradient coils (up to 1400T2/m).  All magnets are provided with vertical room temperature access 50.7mm diameter and may be operated in persistent mode. Special fast ramping magnets are available.

The cryostat is fitted with a two-stage Gifford-McMahon cryocooler to cool and maintain the temperature of the superconducting magnet at 4.2K. The system is sealed with the magnet submerged in a few litres of liquid helium. When the system is warmed up the helium is held as pressurised gas in an external buffer vessel, ready to be condensed at the next cooldown.
